How to Create Search Campaigns for Travel

Google is replacing Things to Do Travel campaigns with a new campaign type called Search campaigns for Travel. This guide walks you through creating a new Search campaign for Travel in Google Ads, step by step.

⚠️ All active Travel campaigns will be auto-migrated starting 28 July 2026. We recommend creating your new campaign manually before the deadline so you stay in full control of your settings.

Step 1: Create a new campaign

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the + button and select "New campaign".

  2. Select "Sales" as your campaign objective.

  3. Pick your conversion goals. Remove any you don't need (e.g. "Phone call leads") by clicking the three dots next to them.

Step 2: Select campaign type and name

  1. Choose "Search" as the campaign type.

  2. Don't select any ways to reach your goals if you only want to track conversions.

  3. Name your campaign clearly (e.g. "Things to Do - [Your Activity] - Search for Travel").

Step 3: Configure bidding

  1. Under "What do you want to focus on?", select "Conversion value" (rather than number of conversions).

  2. Don't set a target ROAS yet. You can add that later once the campaign has enough data.

Step 4: Audience and feed settings

  1. Select your audience segments. Set them to "Observation" (not "Targeting") so you can see performance by audience without restricting reach.

  2. Ensure CaptainBook is selected in the data feed. You don't need to pick specific experiences at this stage.

Step 5: Landing page and ad content

  1. Provide your landing page URL. Use the page specific to the experience you are advertising.

  2. Google will pick up text from your landing page automatically. You can edit the suggested copy as needed.

Step 6: Turn on ad formats

Make sure both formats are enabled: Text ads and Travel promotion ads.

Step 7: Add items from CaptainBook

Select the specific experience(s) from your CaptainBook feed that you want to advertise in this campaign.

Step 8: Keywords

Use Google's AI to generate keyword suggestions based on your landing page. Review the suggestions and adjust as needed.

Step 9: Headlines, descriptions, and sitelinks

  1. Use AI to generate headlines and descriptions, then review and edit them.

  2. Edit your sitelinks to point to relevant pages on your website.

Step 10: Set budget and publish

  1. Set your daily budget.

  2. Review all settings and click "Publish".

After publishing: Ad group settings

Once your campaign is live, go into the ad group settings to fine-tune:

  1. Select an item group (same item you chose during campaign setup).

2. Add locations of interest relevant to your experience.

3.Add a URL inclusion rule (use the same URL as your final destination).

Enable AI Max (recommended)

In your campaign settings, enable "AI Max for Search campaigns". This gives you automated text customization, final URL expansion, and connects your CaptainBook data feed to power travel promotion ads.

Pause your legacy Travel campaign

Once your new campaign is running correctly, go back to your old Travel campaign and pause it (don't delete it). This preserves your historical data and prevents Google from auto-migrating it on 28 July.

📌 Only active Travel campaigns will be auto-migrated. Pausing your legacy campaign after launching the new one prevents duplicate campaigns.
